Slow Down, Give Thanks

November 2nd, 2025

By Maryann Baldwin, The Works Business Coach and SBDC Counselor

In the world of small business ownership, we sometimes feel obligated to say we are busy in order to convey success - "I'm just so busy, there's so much to do!" And in the swirl of it all, the simple act of showing gratitude can be overlooked. However, gratitude is a powerful tool that can significantly impact both personal well-being AND your business's success. By taking a deep breath, slowing down for a moment, and exploring our gratitude, we can actually enhance our ability to lead our business, innovate and even enjoy the ride.

Expressing gratitude can greatly enhance our leadership abilities. When leaders show appreciation for their team, their customers, their vendors and all around them who provide support, it not only boosts morale but also builds trust and loyalty. Employees who feel valued are more likely to be engaged, motivated, and committed to their work. This positive reinforcement encourages a culture of mutual respect and collaboration, where team members are inspired to contribute their best ideas and efforts. As a result, businesses can experience increased creativity, efficiency, and overall success in a culture of gratitude.

Gratitude can also play a crucial role in strengthening relationships with clients and partners. Acknowledging and appreciating the our clients can lead to more enduring relationships. By expressing gratitude, small business owners demonstrate that they value these relationships beyond mere transactions, fostering a sense of loyalty and trust. This can lead to repeat business, referrals, and a solid reputation in the industry, all of which are essential for long-term success. Even just thanking a shopper for choosing to spend a few minutes in your shop or business can create delight and encourage a return visit.

And on a personal level, practicing gratitude can significantly improve our mental and emotional well-being. The small business journey includes an ongoing string of challenges and with that, stress. Gratitude can provide a powerful antidote. By focusing on the positive aspects of the journey and acknowledging the support around us, small business owners can cultivate a mindset of abundance and resilience. This positive outlook not only enhances personal happiness but also equips us to navigate challenges with greater ease and optimism. In essence, gratitude is not just a feel-good practice; it is a strategic approach that can transform the entrepreneurial experience, leading to both personal fulfillment and business success.

What are some accomplishments of the past year that you can look to in your gratitude practice? Celebrating those moments, even months after you experienced them, can help you remember that the commitment and hard work do lead to success in times of impatience or frustration. Grab a pen and paper and make a list of all the things you've accomplished this year, say thanks, and give yourself a big pat on the back!
